Former England and Manchester United star turned Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville will make accommodation at his hotels free of charge to NHS staff.
176 beds at his two Manchester hotels – the Stock Exchange Hotel and Hotel Football at Old Trafford, which he co-owns with former teammate and Wales manager Ryan Giggs – will be available for medical workers who need accommodation, while the hotels will be closed to the public.
“We are delighted to have been able to come to an agreement,” said Neville.
“It is at this moment in time that the whole of our industry needs to show solidarity, not just for our staff in these uncertain times, but for the people who need the accommodation most in the coming months.”
“Our staff will operate the hotel as normal when health workers are allowed to stay there without any cost whatsoever when they need isolation away from family members who might be affected.”
Despite closing to the public, Neville also said that none of the hotels’ staff will be asked to take unpaid leave or will be made redundant.
The news came as Chelsea also announced a similar scheme, where the club’s Millennium Hotel at Stamford Bridge will be made available to NHS staff. The cost of their stay will be covered by club owner Roman Abramovich.
