Gatorade has launched the first smart cap, following consultation with Smart Design and Gatorade Sport Science Institute on both innovation and blueprints.

The smart cap is individually linked to each player, from sodium and electrolyte deficiency to sweat production. The turbine censored smart cap and microchip a  sends data back to a software programme after each sip and sprint.

There are seven components to the smart cap; the cap, each is labelled by the player and their number; the chip, syncs with the player microchip, sending live analytics; turbine, measure liquid exiting the spout; LED lights, compare actual consumption to goals; fuel pod, a concentrated formula based on the athlete’s needs; fuel pod engine, a device used to break and disperse the fuel pod contents; bottle, each can hold around 852ml.

In three years Gatorade developed the smart cap system, generating formulas fueling athletes, optimising hydration and fluid recovery after implementing a 40% increase in recovery and development spending in 2011 to 2014.

An additional feature is a smart scale interconnected to a tablet, logging players training intensity, nutrient intake, and body weight. Once these are sysnced, the software makes recommendations for the athletes and period of training.

Xavi Cortadellas, Gatorade’s global innovation and design senior director said: “It’s about whether you want to be a premium brand or not. If you want to play in the premium space, then you have to be delivering personalization. In all these spaces where we have no or minimal share, the potential for growth is gigantic.”

Testing is being done now with teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, the Boston Celtics and FC Barcelona.
