UK Athletics chief Charles van Commenee has cut funding for a number of British athletes on lottery by 20 percent.
Renowned for his ‘no sentiment’ policy, the new athletics chief said that lottery funds needed to be distributed to those most likely to succeed in London 2012.
After Team GB’s less than stellar performance in Athletics at Beijing, Commenee has narrowed funding distribution down to 33 athletes. He also claimed that further cuts will be made after next year’s World Championships in Berlin.
Gold Medallist Christine Ohuorugu along with five others – all who won medals in Beijing or at last year’s world championships in Osaka – will receive the top level of funding of £25,383 per year.
Thirteen others will receive the next level of funding of a maximum of £19,000 as athletes who finished in the top eight in Beijing or Osaka.
Fourteen more have qualified for third-tier funding of £12,600 per year because they have the potential to win medals at next year’s World Championships.
