Glasgow’s bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the destination of which will be named tomorrow, is not the ‘walkover’ many are predicting according to Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond.

With Glasgow set to discover on Friday if it has beaten its solitary rival, the Nigerian capital of Abuja, to land the 2014 Games, Salmond warned that nothing should be taken for granted.

He commented: ‘Everybody should understand this has never been a walkover or something that is easy. We are in a real competition for something which is really important.

‘The best way to approach things is to take nothing for granted, leave no stone unturned and make sure every single delegate is spoken to.’

The winning bid must get at least 36 of the available 71 votes to secure the Games.

The decision will be announced at a meeting of the Commonwealth Games Federation in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo on Friday.
