Glasgow 2014’s latest and youngest ambassador for next year’s Commonwealth Games met hundreds of fans at a special event in the city on Sunday, as Tom Daley was treated to a bird’s eye view of the city’s nearby Games venues before abseiling down the Finnieston Crane on the banks of the River Clyde.
The double Commonwealth and Olympic medallist then made an appearance at the historic Fruitmarket in the heart of the Merchant City and told a packed audience about his hopes for Glasgow 2014 and the other sports he loves to watch including Badminton, Rugby 7s and Gymnastics.
Tom sported a kilt in the Glasgow 2014 tartan, presented to him by the designer and Shawlands Academy pupil Aamir Mehmood, before taking part in a special dance routine with Official Glasgow 2014 Mascot Clyde and met his creator, 13-year-old Beth Gilmour from Cumbernauld.
Bowling legend Willie Wood then welcomed Tom to join him in a game at Kelvingrove where next year’s Lawn Bowls will take place.
Tom’s appearance in Glasgow comes as the ticket programme enters its final week.
Daley said: ‘I really loved my first experience of Glasgow today – abseiling from the Finnieston Crane was incredible, I met hundreds of my fans in the Fruitmarket and I had a go at playing Lawn Bowls at the Kelvingrove venue.’
‘What a friendly city! What a welcome! It’s obvious that the atmosphere here for the Games will be awesome and I can’t wait to be part of it all.’
‘I know there’s just one week for people to get their ticket applications in and I’d urge everyone to be part of this once in a lifetime event. Today was just a taste of what’s to come next year and I’m really excited to come back to defend my Commonwealth title in front of a brilliant home crowd.’
David Grevemberg, chief executive of Glasgow 2014, added: ‘Tom’s the prefect ambassador to inspire young people about sport and help us get everyone involved in the UK’s next major sporting celebration.’
‘It has been great to welcome him to Glasgow and to see the warm welcome he has received this weekend and what he can look forward to in 2014.’
Ticket applications can be made on glasgow2014.com/tickets or via postal applications forms distributed nationwide with the Official Ticketing Guide. The four-week ticketing phase closes at 6pm on 16th September.
