An official report into the bidding cities for the 2014 Commonwealth Games has
placed Glasgow as the frontrunner.

The evaluation commission of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) reported
Glasgow’s proposals as ‘grounded in a thoughtful and practical approach’.

The report placed the Glasgow bid ahead of its rival, the Nigerian city of
Abuja.

A final decision on the 2014 venue will be made on 9th November.

The evaluation commission said: ‘Glasgow has demonstrated an understanding of
the major requirements to stage the Commonwealth Games. The venue and legacy
issues were appropriately addressed with obvious sensitivity to Glasgow’s
long-term needs.’

In comparison, the report questioned Abuja’s ability to raise £80m through
marketing, describing that aim as ‘a significant challenge and risk to the Games
budget’.
