Glasgow has been named as the host city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, beating off the rival bid from the Nigerian capital of Abuja.

The Scottish city secured the necessary majority from the 71 voting nations of the Commonwealth Games Federation at a meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The Commonwealth nations voted to give Glasgow the Games over Abuja by 47 votes to 24.

It has been estimated that it will cost Glasgow £288m to stage the Commonwealth Games, with most of the funding coming from the Scottish Government.

The UK last staged the Commonwealth Games in 2002 when Manchester put on the most commercially successful Games in history.
