Glasgow has launched its candidature for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games by highlighting the legacy offering provided by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, along with the city’s own staging of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Glasgow 2018 hopes to capitalise on the opportunities created by London 2012 and Glasgow 2014, as well as the city’s ongoing international sporting events programme.

The bid is a partnership between the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and the British Olympic Association (BOA) and has the full support of government at all levels.

Leader of Glasgow City Council, Councillor Gordon Matheson, said: ‘Glasgow is already known the world over as a great sporting city because of our proud track record of hosting international events and investing in world-class sports infrastructure. Hosting the 2018 Youth Olympic Games would be a new success story for our city and one that we are determined to capitalise on.’

Glasgow 2018 claimed a world first through the launch of the candidature entirely by young people, and has highlighted its focus on the next generation through the ‘Be a Champion in Your Life’ campaign.

Singapore’s hosted the inaugural Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2010, with the Chinese city of Nanjing set to stage the event in 2014.

Glasgow comes up against Buenos Aires (Argentina), Medellin (Colombia), Guadalajara (Mexico), Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Poznan (Poland) for the right to stage the event.

The International Olympic Committee will vote on the winner in July 2013.
