The organising committee for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games is looking to target sponsors who have been priced out of an association with the London 2012 Olympics.
The cost of a top-tier domestic sponsorship deal with London 2012 is estimated to be in the region of £60m-80m – a figure that has ruled many brands out of the running despite having an innate interest in sport sponsorship.
The Glasgow 2014 committee believes it can pick up on this interest according to Derek Casey, interim chief executive of the Games Organising Committee, who told members of the Scottish Parliament that a number of companies ‘have already approached us’ about sponsoring the Commonwealth Games.
Organisers told MSPs that they were confident they could meet the target sponsorship of £24m.
Casey also said that the Games budget, set at £373m, with expected revenue of £75m, is ‘realistic and robust’.
