The third episode of GOAL Editions puts a spotlight on female footballers from Afghanistan, who were forced to flee and now play the sport they love in countries such as the UK

When the Taliban banned women’s sport in 2021, Afghan footballers Fatema Baratyan, Elaha Safdari, and Sahar Chamran told GOAL Editions how they were forced to flee, leaving behind their teammates, their home, and their dreams.

Now living in exile across several countries, including the UK, they train with refugee teams and speak out for millions of Afghan girls barred from sport, education, and basic freedoms. “Football didn’t just save our life,” Fatema says. “It gave us the purpose to raise our voice for all the voiceless.”
