GoFundMe has announced a new effort to support athletes around the world who have created campaigns to help pay for training and travel for the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Almost $400,000 has been raised on the crowdfunding website for athletes over the past several months as they work to qualify and compete in Brazil.
To help these Olympic hopefuls, GoFundMe has created a hub to showcase the athletes fundraising to compete in the Games, which can be found here.
Over the course of the next few months, GoFundMe will announce new initiatives to rally support for the athletes who have used the crowdfunding site to fund their competitive journey.
Rob Solomon, CEO of GoFundMe.com, said: “As a former athlete myself, it’s exciting to see these young competitors on the road to Rio turn to GoFundMe to achieve their dreams. I hope others are inspired to join our giving community and support these athletes.”
GoFundMe provides a platform for people to organise their own campaign to raise money for personal causes and life events and invite those in their community to support their fundraising.
20-year-old Team GB rifle shooter Katie Gleeson (pictured above), who has broken four British records, is just one of the athletes looking for funding on the GoFundMe page.
