The public opening of Great Leighs in Essex, the first new racecourse in Britain since 1927, will go ahead as planned.
The British Horse Racing Authority has announced that racing has been given the green light after the course passed an inspection.
Two sets of work were completed to the BHA’s satisfaction and spectators will now get the chance to see racing at the course for the first time.
The £30m flat track is the first new venue since Taunton in 1927. Officials were given until Wednesday morning to complete a service road for official vehicles, including ambulances, after failing to complete the work over the weekend.
The course was due to open in October 2006 but has been beset by problems, and finally started staging races – with no paying spectators – on 20th April 2008.
Great Leighs will welcome a reduced attendance of 3,500 spectators when it finally opens its doors.
