Simon Greenberg, the outgoing Chelsea communications and public affairs director, is to join the England 2018 bid team as its chief of staff.
The announcement is the latest in a number of structural changes within the bid team, including a reduction in the number of board directors from 12 to 7, following a spate of recent criticism as to the bid’s progress.
Greenberg, a former sports journalist with the Evening Standard, had already announced his intention to leave Stamford Bridge and will take up his new role on 1st December with specific responsibilities for campaign strategy and strategic communications.
Greenberg will continue to chair the London United host city bid team – the collaboration taskforce set up by all the London Premier League clubs to lobby to be part of the 2018 bid – until he takes up his new job in December and will oversee the submission of its bid book by the Football Association’s 26th November deadline.
No decision has yet been made on Greenberg continuing that role beyond then, although conflicts of interest mean that it is likely he would stand aside.
