The Welsh Rugby Union will have a new president after it was revealed that
incumbent Glanmor Griffiths will not be seeking re-election to the post.
The 67-year old Griffiths has withdrawn from the annual elections for the
presidency taking place this week citing family healths reasons for his
decision.
Griffiths has served the WRU for 22 years and was voted back into the office
of president in May following the death of Keith Rowlands.
‘While it is hugely appealing to stand, I do have to take into account other
important considerations,’ he stated.
‘It has been a huge honour to once again serve the WRU. I understand that
there are other candidates, who include Dennis Gethin and JPR Williams, and I am
sure the clubs will once again choose an excellent new president.’
The successful candidate will take up his post after the AGM at the end of
October.
Griffiths served as chairman of both the WRU and Millennium Stadium, as well
as WRU honorary treasurer and president.
He has also sat on the boards of
the International Rugby Board, the Five Nations, Home Unions and European Rugby
Cup Ltd.
