Premier Rugby has announced that regular season crowd attendances in the Guinness Premiership rugby union top-flight for the 2008/9 season have risen by 10% year-on-year.

The average attendance for a Guinness Premiership game during the 2008/9 season was 11,414 compared to 10,382 in the 2007/8 season.

Similarly, the cumulative attendance has risen from 1,373,363 in the 2007/8 season, to 1,506,639 in the 2008/9 season, the first time the figure has gone through the 1.5m mark.

Mark McCafferty, chief executive of Premier Rugby, said ‘These figures show that despite the current difficult economic times the Guinness Premiership continues to provide great value-for-money world-class entertainment. Not only are the attendance figures up but we’re on track once again for a capacity crowd of 81,600 at Twickenham Stadium for the Guinness Premiership Final on Saturday 16th May.’

The Guinness Premiership semi-finals take place on Saturday 9th May with Leicester Tigers facing Bath Rugby at the Walkers Stadium at 3pm, followed by Harlequins against London Irish at the Twickenham Stoop at 5.30pm.

The winning club from each match will progress to the Guinness Premiership Final at Twickenham on Saturday 16th May for the chance to be crowned Guinness Premiership champions.

The match has been selling at a record rate and there are now only 5,000 tickets left on general sale outside of the 7,500 allocated for each Guinness Premiership finalist club.
