Guinness has replaced RaboDirect as the new title sponsor of rugby union’s Pro12 competition, to be renamed the Guinness Pro12.

The deal was announced along with the fixture list for the 2014/15 Pro12 season, which will see reigning champions Leinster face Glasgow Warriors in the opening round in early September.

The Diageo-owned stout brand becomes the third title sponsor in eight years of the competition, which comprises of teams from Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy.

According to media reports, the new contract is believed to be a two-year deal with an option to extend, while no financial terms were released.

The new agreement expands Guinness’ rugby portfolio, which already includes deals with the Six Nations, Premiership Rugby, and the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish rugby unions.

John Feehan, the chief executive of the Guinness Pro12, said: ‘We are delighted that Guinness, an international brand with a strong pedigree in rugby, will be our title sponsor and we are looking forward to working with Guinness in actively developing the profile and stature of our competition which boasts some of the biggest names in world rugby.’
