The Finnish city of Helsinki has been named as the host of the European Athletics Championships in 2012 – the third time it has staged the flagship event.

The announcement also marks the first time that the Championships will switch from a four to a two-year cycle.

The event will take place from 27th June-1st July with the marathon and walking events dropped because of the close proximity to the 2012 Olympics.

However, with the London Games due to start on 27th July, there is a threat that leading athletes could opt not to compete in Helsinki.

A full championship programme will be held in non-Olympic years.
