Coca-Cola Championship football club Sheffield Wednesday’s £22m plan to redevelop Hillsborough Stadium has been approved.
The revamp will increase the ground’s capacity from 39,000 to 45,000 as well as give the Kop and West stands new roofs and extend the North stand.
The club said it hoped the new-look Hillsborough would help it meet the FA’s criteria to be a potential host venue in England’s World Cup 2018 bid. Work is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.
Sheffield Wednesday said improving the ‘matchday experience’ for its supporters was at the heart of the redevelopment.
Other plans include an extension of the North Stand to create an education facility and 17 new executive boxes.
Funding is expected to come from increased club revenue and government grants.
