Indian officials have reassured foreign teams that the hockey World Cup in February will be a safe tournament.

Security fears were provoked about the tournament that takes place in Delhi after last week’s bombing in the city of Pun, which killed 11 people, and alleged new threats from a group that claims to be targeting sporting events.

Home secretary GK Pillai said ‘We are in close touch with security liaison officers of all countries that are coming here to participate. So far, all of them have seen the preparations done by the Delhi Police and the Ministry of Home Affairs. They are quite satisfied.’

Security measures have been designed to ensure a safe hockey World Cup along with the Commonwealth Games later this year.

Australia, who will play England in the opening match of the tournament on 28th February, have said they plan to attend the event, but New Zealand have delayed their departure for India until a security update has been received.

However, Hockey India confirmed that no team had threatened to pull out of the World Cup.
