Former Australian Prime Minister John Howard’s bid to become the next vice-president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) has been rejected.

The 70-year-old had hoped to become vice-president of the governing body before taking up the presidency in 2012.

An Australasian is due to hold the two-year rotating presidency from mid-2012 but the ICC has asked Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket to find someone else as reportedly 10 of the major cricket nations opposed Howard’s bid.

Under a rotational five-region electoral process, Howard was the joint candidate from Australia and New Zealand.

It is rumoured that the void may be filled by New Zealand’s former cricket board chairman Sir John Anderson, the man Howard beat to become the Australasian candidate.
