Ted Howard has been promoted to acting general secretary of the CONCACAF, which governs North and Central America and the Caribbean, following the resignation last year of Chuck Blazer.

The appointment of the 66-year-old Howard was announced Monday by CONCACAF.

Howard has been deputy general secretary since 1998 and replaces Blazer, who had been general secretary since 1990.

He announced his resignation in October, taking effect at the end of the year.

Blazer said in May that CONCACAF President Jack Warner and Asian confederation head Mohamed bin Hammam attempted to bribe Caribbean delegates $40,000 each to vote for Bin Hammam in the FIFA presidential election.

Lisle Austin, Warner’s acting successor then tried to fire Blazer, and Austin was suspended from the sport for one year.

Blazer remains a member of the FIFA executive committee.
