HSBC and Cathay Pacific have announced a new partnership to co-sponsor the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament from next year.
The brands have signed a four-year deal to sponsor the tournament and promote the sport that will make its Olympic debut in 2016.
Giles Morgan, HSBC’s head of global sponsorship, said: ‘It is a perfect marriage. Rugby sevens is growing exponentially and the Hong Kong tournament helped it grow from a small base to an Olympic sport.
‘Sponsorship of this tournament on top of our sponsorship of the World Sevens Series really seals it for us’.
Sevens will make its first Olympic appearance in Rio in five years time, although the full form of the game appeared in four of the first seven Olympic Games, before being dropped in 1924.
Cathay chief executive John Slosar added: ‘It’s great to see two of Hong Kong’s world-beating brands – both so closely associated with the city – once again linked to this world-beating sports spectacular.
‘Backed by the power of Hong Kong’s two biggest international brands, I believe we’ll see the Hong Kong Sevens soar to new heights’.
HSBC’s sponsorship means Credit Suisse will end its tenure as a co-sponsor.
