English Football League (EFL) Championship club Huddersfield Town FC has been taken over by an undisclosed North American group.

The deal follows Huddersfield Town’s Chairman Dean Hoyle’s acquisition of 75% of club shares from Pure Sports Consultancy to secure 100% ownership of the Terriers. He has now subsequently sold them.

The group Hoyle has sold to has remains unnamed, and only described as ‘North American’.

In a statement, Huddersfield added that the takeover was subject to ‘legislative and governance procedures’, and that more information would be provided after completion.

According to the Daily Mail, the club will avoid administration after Hoyle wrote off £40m as part of the deal, preventing the club from receiving a points deduction and likely relegation.

Hoyle initially took over in 2009 before selling the club to Phil Hodgkinson, after 11 years at the club. He returned in 2021 to provide funding due to Hodgkinson’s financial difficulties but stepped down as Chief Executive on medical advice in 2022.

The club is currently under a transfer embargo after submitting accounts late in March, and the team is struggling in the league. Neil Warnock’s side currently sit in 22nd place and relegation is a possibility.
