British sailor Alex Thomson has announced a new sponsorship deal with his current backers Hugo Boss ahead of this year’s Transat Jacques Vabre race.

The German fashion group is believed to have pledged more than £5m over the next three years, renewing a seven year agreement that is now one of the longest within the Open 60 class.

It will enable Thomson to compete in the two-handed Barcelona World Race next year and the Vendee Globe in 2012 in his two year-old Open 60 which was recently acquired from Team Pindar.

In the 4,700nm Transat Jacques Vabre, the 33 year-old skipper from Gosport races with Ross Daniel, a member of his shore crew.

Hugo Boss is one of four British entries in the two-handed race with Sam Davies competing on Artemis Ocean Racing with Frenchman Sidney Gavignet, Dee Caffari and Brian Thompson racing on Aviva and Mike Golding sailing with Spanish co-skipper Javier Sanso on his unsponsored Open 60 Mike Golding Yacht Racing.
