The Hundred, the ECB’s new 100-ball competition, has launched the identities and designated England players for all eight, brand new city-based franchishes, just weeks before its inaugural Player Draft.
England Test captain Joe Root will head up the Trent Rockets, a departure from his Yorkshire roots, while breakout summer star Jofra Archer will lead the Southern Braves. Elsewhere, Ben Stokes – whose heroics during the ICC Cricket World Cup and The Ashes have been hailed as generational – will play at Headingley for the Northern Superchargers.
England Women’s vice captain Anya Shrubsole, meanwhile, will join Archer at the Southern Braves while 2018 ICC Emerging Player of the Year Sophie Ecclestone will head to Old Trafford to star for the Manchester Originals.
Interestingly, Surrey County Cricket Club captain Rory Burns has been selected by the London Spirit, who will play at his home team’s rival ground Lord’s, while the Curran brothers will star at the Oval for the Oval Invincibles.
Alongside the launch of the players, The Hundred have unveiled the kits and visual identities of each team. All eight franchise shirts are adorned by a different KP Snacks product, after the brand was announced as the new competition’s first commercial partner last month.
Discussing the announcement, Sanjay Patel – who previously spoke at Sport Industry’s Breakfast Club – said: “We are thrilled to share the line-up of amazingly talented England and domestic players who will be starring in the men and women’s competitions for The Hundred next summer. Our ambition is to inspire the next generation to pick up a bat and ball and we hope that a fire will be ignited in young people as they see their sporting heroes play in The Hundred.”
