Iaaf Planning Second-tier Series

Athletics’ world governing body the IAAF is planning a second-tier of events which will feed into the elite Diamond League events being launched next year.


According to media reports the IAAF has stated that the new second-tier competition would be the same size as the 14-event Diamond League, but that details would only be finalised in the Autumn.


Berlin, the most notable venue excluded from the list of Diamond League event venues, is likely to be part of the second-tier tournament


Also being considered as potential hosts are Osaka, Japan; Ostrava, Czech Republic; Hengelo, the Netherlands; Melbourne, Australia; Senegalese capital Dakar; Belem, Brazil; Athens or Thessaloniki in Greece; and Rieti, Italy.


Kingston in Jamaica, Daegu in South Korea and a South African and Central American location are also believed to be in the mind of the IAAF.
