World athletics body the IAAF is expected to unveil plans to revamp its flagship Golden League series of competitions, extending the number of meetings from six to 12.

The world governing body will announce what will be called the Diamond League – a series of 12 meetings worldwide which would replace the six all currently held on European soil.

Plans include ensuring there are more head-to-heads between top stars than has happened in the past.

However the IAAF now faces a challenge to see if athletes would be prepared to sign contracts to take part in every one of the dozen events.

There is also speculation that the European promoters have already met and have opinions on the venues for the new calendar of events which differ from those of the IAAF.

Although all parties are open to new ideas to revive the sport, they recognise that two of the existing meetings in Berlin, Brussels, Oslo, Paris, Rome and Zurich, could lose premier status.

IAAF president Lamine Diack is planning to meet with chief executives from those venues to thrash out a final agreement.
