As official supplier of information technology and consultancy to The Wimbledon Championships, IBM have been measuring the noise on and off the court.

New figures released have shown that noise levels on Murray Mound reached 112.7 decibels – the equivalent of a rock concert – during Murray’s win against Spain’s Verdasco. Meanwhile fans off the court flocked to Twitter, posting more than 75,000 tweets around the match. In comparison, applause during Djokovic’s match against Berdych peaked at just 89.1 decibels.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s appearance at Wimbledon led to a spike in activity with 1,455 mentions on Twitter. Speaking of the figures Chris Thomas, Big Data Solution Architect for IBM, said: ‘Whilst excitement is always high at SW19, this year we’ve seen a phenomenal response from fans across the globe on Twitter. Social interaction is becoming increasingly important to athletes regardless of their level. Players are a one-man brand and need to take care of their image just like any business would. It’s just as important that they engage with their fans, as a large organisation engages with its customers.’

Official findings from IBM show that Novak Djokovic currently has the best fan engagement, following his open discussions with fans on Twitter.
