The International Cricket Council (ICC) has indicated that the proposed world Test championship is likely to go ahead.??
The ICC chief executives’ committee (CEC) has recommended setting up a Test league that would include a playoff involving the top four teams to crown a champion – with the inaugural playoff being held in 2013.??
‘We have agreed in principle to exciting and far-reaching proposals to tackle this most important issue,’ said ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat.
‘Achieving balance and unanimous agreement is not easy but we have responded well to a strategic priority to restructure international cricket.’
‘The proposals, especially introducing more meaningful context, means we now have the potential to follow international cricket that is even more exciting.’??
The ICC board also agreed to a one-day league, the first running from 2011-14 and separate from the Cricket World Cup, culminating in a ODI league champion.
The board also approved the recommendations for the World Cup to be reduced from the current 14 participating teams to 10 teams, for the 2015 event in Australia and New Zealand.
Whilst the ICC World Twenty20 is set to be expanded from 12 to 16 teams for the 2012 competition in Sri Lanka – with a world ranking system for Twenty20 internationals also set to be introduced.
