The sports economy in Leicestershire is worth £285m per year, according to a new prospectus launched by Leicester Council to highlight the region’s breadth of sporting venues and their economic contribution.
‘Leicester and Leicestershire: A Premier Sporting Locations’ also found that sport supports 8,405 jobs and attracts two million visitors to the region every year.
The prospectus has been launched ahead of Leicester and Leicestershire’s first ‘Big Sporting Weekend’ on 27th-28th April – with a host of top-flight fixtures held in the city, including Leicester City (football), Leicester Tigers (rugby union), Leicester Riders (basketball), British Touring Cars and Leicester Lions (speedway).
Andy Reed OBE, Vice Chair of the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership, said: “The sports sector in Leicester and Leicestershire has been recognised for some time for its contribution to the local economy. The visitors the area welcomes through sport, bring wider economic benefits across a range of sectors and help to raise the profile of Leicester and Leicestershire further afield.”
