The Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021) has announced three new board appointments, including former special advisor to six Secretaries of State for Northern Ireland, Jonathan Caine, Lord Caine.
Caine will become the DCMS representative on the tournament’s Board, and will be joined by former England and GB Hockey Head of Events and Competitions Sue Catton, who will be the UK Sport representative, and former London 2012 Organising Committee Head of Telecommunication Services, Emma Young, who will be the international rugby league representative.
The RLWC2021 has announced that the Board will also be supported by the strategic advice of Hitesh Patel, Head of International Sport, Major Sports Events at DCMS, who will join as an observer.
News and video provider SNTV has partnered with SailGP to distribute all race highlights, pre and post-race reaction, athlete features, and social initiatives for the racing league as it begins its second season.
The partnership will see SNTV showcase SailGP content from each event in front of its engaged international network of 1,200+ media outlets across broadcast, digital and social, driving awareness and increasing the profile of its second season globally.
The deal will also see SailGP’s video news content promoted across multisport social media channels as well as sport-specific websites and major regional channels.
Live-streaming service Joymo has announced a new partnership with the Northumberland Football Leagues that will see one of the UK’s biggest football organisations livestream some of its competitions when grassroots sport returns.
The collaboration – which Joymo says is one of the first between a streaming services provider and a UK grassroots football league – will kick-off with exclusive coverage of Northumberland’s Senior Women’s League, Under 19 Boys League and the association’s annual youth tournament, which features more than 200 amateur clubs in the county. Laureus Sport for Good and LimeLight Sports Group have launched a new ‘Active World Fund’ which aims to benefit communities in the UK by providing more people with the opportunity to access sport and physical activity.
The LimeLight Sports Group will commit a minimum of £30,000 per annum to the fund and will work in partnership with Laureus to identify organisations and communities to support.
The agency – which hosts events such as the Asics London 10K, the Etape Caledonia, and the Oxford Half – will also look to raise money for the Active World Fund through a number of initiatives using their wider industry networks.
Before their FIFA World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar, Norway players wore t-shirts bearing the message ‘Human rights – on and off the pitch’ in protest at Qatar’s human rights record.
The players wore the t-shirts during the national anthem, expressing their concern over human rights issues in the country that will host the World Cup in 2022.
Norway manager Stale Solbakken said the move was designed to put ‘pressure’ on FIFA, to ‘impose stricter requirements’ on Qatar on the issue.
The Swimathon Foundation has awarded a total of £30,000 in grants to 148 swimming and aquatic clubs, swim schools and independent swimming and aquatic organisations, raised through its 2021 COVID-19 Relief Fund.
The foundation launched its first Fund in May 2020 in response to the pandemic, and awarded an initial £50,000 of grants.
In early 2021, it then released a further £30,000 to aid the swimming community, with some 250 organisations and individuals supported overall
