Women in Sport has renewed calls to prioritise sport and exercise for women as a new study has shown that women’s fitness has been disproportionately affected by the coronavirus lockdown.
The research, funded by Comic Relief, looked at the implications of lockdown on participation in sport, finding that women – and especially those juggling work, family and homeschooling commitments – have been hit the hardest.
Some 36% of women said that losing their fitness would have a long-term impact on their lives, while 25% were worried that it would be hard to get back into the habit of exercise after lockdown. Almost a third (32%) said they couldn’t prioritise exercise due to commitments to helping others, however 61% of the women surveyed said they intend to put more effort into fitness when lockdown is over.
The Women in Sport charity says this last statistic gives sport organisations an opportunity to provide an accessible entry point to sport and exercise, but should also put pressure on how we enable women to prioritise themselves and find time to be active.
