A maximum of 10,000 fans will be allowed to attend venues at this year’s rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The IOC and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee confirmed in a joint-statement that capacity for the Games will be set at 50% of the venue’s capacity up to 10,000.
The pair also confirmed that the figure was subject to change if new measures to combat the pandemic were put in place by the Japanese authorities.
If a new ‘state of emergency, or other priority measures aimed at preventing infection’ are implemented after 12th July then new restrictions on spectator numbers could be imposed.
According to the IOC and Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, the Japanese authorities have formulated guidelines for spectators, which include ensuring that masks are worn in venues at all times, while ‘speaking in a loud voice or shouting will be prohibited’.
Spectators will also be asked to travel directly to venues and return home directly, while organisers will also aim to avoid congestion in venues. Fans will also be asked to leave venues in a staggered manner to avoid close contact.
The IOC and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee said in a joint statement: “In order to conduct safe and secure Games for the whole of Japan, there will be strong coordination and cooperation with local governments to ensure the above guidelines are followed.
“The situation will be monitored in Japan and abroad, including the status of the different variants of the coronavirus, and all necessary action will be taken promptly. Vaccination of those involved with the Games will continue, and the vaccination status will be further updated.
“There are 32 days to go until the Olympic Games and 64 days to go until the Paralympic Games, and the five parties will continue to work together to ensure safe and secure Games for all.”
The Games are set to commence on 23rd July, with the Paralympic Games scheduled to start on 24th August. The joint-statement from the IOC and Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee also confirmed that the ‘equivalent policies governing the Paralympic Games’ will be communicated later, and will be decided by 16th July.
