The International Olympic Committee has voiced its support for the to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s controversial ‘Whereabouts’ policy, following the governing body’s row with FIFA and UEFA who have adamantly voiced their opposition to the scheme.

WADA is currently engaged in a battle with the international football governing bodies over the scheme, which requires athletes to notify the anti-doping organisation of their location for an hour a day.

IOC President Jacques Rogge, however, has voiced support for WADA’s efforts. However, he would not affirm that football could be removed as an Olympic sport if it did not agree to comply with the new rule.

Regardless of IOC’s support for the scheme, the football governing bodies are standing firm in their opposition, claiming that the scheme should apply to teams, not individual players, as FIFA and UEFA have anti-doping measures of their own.

The IOC’s stance is a continuation of an ongoing row within the Olympic sports community regarding ‘Whereabouts’, in which many professional athletes and representatives have vehemently opposed the policy, claiming an invasion of privacy.
