The Paralympic Games will go ahead with no spectators in attendance, after confirmation from the IPC and the Games Organisers.

The pair, along with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), and the Government of Japan held talks, and laid out details of an agreement to restrict crowds at the event.

The organisations had previously met on 8th July – before the Olympic Games – and said they would make decisions after the closing ceremony of that event.

No spectators will be in attendance at the Games, while organisers will also ask the general public to refrain from coming to the roadsides to watch outdoor competitions.

However, some children on the IPC’s school programme will be allowed to attend ‘where local authorities or school administrations request this in response to the wishes of parents and others’, while safety measures will be put in place.

The IPC says this decision was taken as the Games are ‘very important in helping us realise a more inclusive society’

In a statement, the IPC said: “We very much regret that this situation has impacted the Paralympic Games, following the Olympic Games, and we sincerely apologise to all ticket buyers who were looking forward to watching the Games at the venues.

“We hope that you understand that these measures are unavoidable and being implemented in order to prevent the spread of infection. Everyone is encouraged to watch the Games at home.”
