The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is considering plans for a series of grand prix events, similar to the International Association of Athletics Federations’ (IAAF) Diamond League concept, according to media reports.
The news follows the huge success of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
The Independent on Sunday newspaper reported the IPC would trial a global series of track and field meetings modelled on the Diamond League with two of the eight meetings, including the final, to be staged in the UK.
However, Craig Spence, the IPC’s director of communications, has since insisted that no deal has been finalised.
In a statement, Spence said: ‘Following the success of London 2012, IPC Athletics is looking into how it can stage a number of high profile meetings to capitalise on increasing global interest and to create more competition opportunities for athletes.’
‘However, this project is still very much in its infancy; absolutely nothing is agreed nor signed. At the moment we have a strong proposal and are having discussions with interested parties.’
