The Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket competition and Twitter have extended their partnership for the 2015 season, with a number of new content expansions.

The 2015 season continues a formal partnership between Twitter and the IPL which first commenced in 2013.

The new features will see IPL 8 become the world’s first sports league to use ‘hashflags’ on Twitter, where users will see a team’s flag appearing when it uses its official Twitter hashtag.

Twitter has previously used hashflags for countries competing at major international sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup.

The ‘Missed Calls’ facility allows fans to stay in touch with the IPL through their Twitter account. Supporters can give a Missed Call to the free service on 011 3008 2008 and they will receive up to six tweets per day from the official IPL account as an SMS, allowing users to receive Twitter updates without an internet connection.

Other Twitter features for this year’s tournament include an IPL Timeline, which can be accessed on all Twitter platforms including iOS, Android and Twitter.com, and exclusive content via Periscope – Twitter’s new live video streaming app.

Rishi Jaitly, market director in India and Southeast Asia for Twitter, said: “Over the past three seasons, Twitter has laid the foundation to consistently provide more for the cricket fan in partnership with the Indian Premier League.

“The IPL has led the way with cutting edge innovations and we are thrilled that they are giving Twitter users the opportunity to consume and engage with such premium content and content participation experiences again this season. It is a reflection of their commitment to reach and engage a mobile, global fanbase across all screens and devices.”
