The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) has given its support to the Irish Rugby Union’s (IRFU) efforts to launch a bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The support from the GAA means the IRFU will now be able to use the GAA’s stadia during the tournament. Matches would now be able to be played at Croke Park, the 82,000 seat stadium, and 10 other stadiums primarily used for Gaelic sports.

Leo Varadkar, The Irish government’s sport minister, said of the GAA and government support of the IRFU’s use of stadia during a potential Irish World Cup: ‘The support of the GAA is a very important element in relation to any future bid by the IRFU to host the Rugby World Cup in Ireland. I am very pleased that Congress has approved this motion to allow the inclusion of Croke Park and other GAA stadiums in the list of venues. This spirit of co-operation is very welcome.’
