Broadcaster ITV has been forced to issue an apology after fans watching the England World Cup match on its High Definition service missed England’s goal and were instead shown a Hyundai advert.
The match against United States was interrupted by the advert when the game was still a scoreless draw and when the game was bought back onto the screen it was already 1-0 to England.
Reports suggest that the blunder caused more than a million fans in the UK to miss Steven Gerrard’s opening goal.
Presenter Adrian Chiles apologised on air for the interruption in the HD coverage.
The technical glitch was a repeat of last year when ITV viewers missed Everton’s winning goal against Liverpool during an FA Cup match.
