Manchester City and England forward Jack Grealish is close to agreeing an unprecedented, multi-year sponsorship deal with fashion giant Gucci, The Athletic reports.
Jack Grealish became the most expensive British footballer of all time last year when he joined Manchester City from Aston Villa for £100m. Grealish also helped England reach the European Championship final and established himself as an iconic figure during the tournament. The 26-year-old became a fan-favourite in a summer that saw that saw the midfielder’s profile rocket.
This has led to several lucrative sponsorship opportunities. The partnership with the renowned fashion house Gucci would be the most significant yet, the deal making him an official ambassador of the luxury Italian company, an unprecedented role for a sportsperson.
Gucci ordinarily uses star names from the acting and music industries to promote its brand and products, so joining forces with the Birmingham-born athlete gives some indication to his global appeal.
The finances of the deal remain undisclosed, but it is believed to be worth seven figures.
Although not a priority, The Athletic suggests that commercial status and potential was a factor of which City were aware of when they paid a record fee to bring Grealish to the Etihad Stadium.
On the pitch, Grealish is currently contesting for the biggest trophies in the game. Manchester City is currently in the race for the Premier League title, FA Cup and Champions League, and the former Villa star is also likely to be a key part of Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad in Qatar.
