Jermaine Jenas and PL ref Simon Hooper front the latest instalment of the NHS’s Test and Trace campaign, urging five a side footballers to get back to playing safely.

The pair have released a new film to promote the importance of testing, and to remind football fans not to attend public gatherings to watch the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League finals, or participate in team sport if they feel unwell or are displaying symptoms, no matter how mild.

The video titled ‘Let’s Get Back to Football’ features the pundit and the referee surprising a group of young five-a-side players at Powerleague in Shoreditch.

In the video, Jenas provides a team talk to remind the players that they can get a free test if they have symptoms by calling 119, or visiting NHS.uk, while Hooper lets the players know they need to contain the virus if football is to return to large gatherings in stadiums again.

“Whether it’s playing, watching with friends in a pub, or getting back to stadiums to see their team live, football is a massive part of life for millions up and down the country,” said Jenas.

“We all want to get back to enjoying the sport we love as quickly as we can, but we need to do so in the right way to control the spread of coronavirus by getting tested if you have symptoms. This video is all about making sure football fans out there know the right behaviours so they can enjoy the sport they love safely.”

Hooper added: “There’s no denying that since Project Restart, refereeing Premier League games surrounded by empty stands is an odd experience and I can’t wait to hopefully getting back to officiating in packed stadiums at some point next season.

“However, to get to this point it’s vital that we all do the right thing and make sure we get tested for Covid-19 even if we only have minor symptoms.Testing has become part and parcel of the new normal for referees, players, and staff over the past few months, and on a personal level, my wife works for the NHS, so I know how important it is for everyone to get tested, as until a vaccine is found, this is the best way we can all help contain the virus and keep enjoying football.”
