ITV has announced that Director of News Michael Jermey’s role will be expanded to oversee ITV Sport.

Jermey will now be Director of News, Current Affairs and Sport and will appoint and manage a new Controller of Sport, who will be responsible for ITV Sport commissioning and production.

He will work alongside Jonathan Rogers, who has the responsibility for ITV’s sports rights strategy and rights buying in the role of Commercial Director, ITV Channels.

Jermey will continue to report to Peter Fincham, ITV Director of Television, Channels and Online, and will retain responsibility for network news and the ITV regions.

Formerly Director of ITV Regions, Jermey replaces Mark Sharman, who was previously the ITV Director of News and Sport and was responsible for expanding the role. Sharman is known for scoring sizeable TV sports rights deals for ITV, which includes striking a £425m joint deal with pay-TV broadcaster Setanta and scooping up live FA Cup and England matches from the BBC.

Jermey joined ITV in 2004 and as the first Editor of ITV Regional News led the editorial process of bringing together all ITV’s regional news services into one united ITV News Group.

Before joining ITV, Jermey had a long career as an executive at ITN and has covered events in England internationals, UEFA Champions League, The FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Football League highlights, world championship boxing, the Tour de France, Guinness Premiership Rugby, darts and tennis.
