Jump Design has created a new opening sequence commissioned by Sunset and Vine for Channel 4’s coverage of the Paralympic Games in Rio, which debuted last night ahead of the opening ceremony.
The creative from the agency, also the official visual graphics supplier of the BT Sport Industry Awards, sees six Team GB athletes who starred at London 2012 transformed through Brazilian illustration and cel animation.

Each animation expresses their individual abilities, personalities and Paralympic glories, picking up the athletes’ stories from London 2012 and delivering them to Rio 2016.
The sequence sees Jonnie Peacock strut down the 100m with peacock feathers, Ellie Simmonds becomes one with the water, Hannah Cockroft engulfs her competitors with the power of a hurricane, David Weir transforms into the ‘Weir Wolf’, Sarah Storey becomes liquid gold as Paralympic royalty and Richard Whitehead blasts through his competition in the final stretch.

By animating directly on-top of footage from London 2012 Jump Design aimed to retain the visceral emotion that triggers vivid memories of the achievements in London.
Lee Jacobs, art director at Jump Design, commented: “Channel 4 allowed us a blank canvas brief, and with their mantra ‘Born Risky’ ringing in our ears, we were able to let rip creatively. Armed with all the colours in the box and a reason to use them, we worked with cel animation to realise a set of truly fantastical ideas in this sequence.

The sequence was design and animated in-house at Jump using 2D Flash Animation, Cinema 4D & After Effects.
