Australian sports manufacturer Kookaburra says it is developing a smart cricket ball to transmit real-time feedback on a range of statistics.

The ball will collect data on ball revolutions and delivery speed as well as pre-bounce and post-bounce data, all collected from a microlight chip embedded into the ball. The data is then sent to an app available on phones and tablets.

“There is not enough testing done yet for it go straight into a test match tomorrow,” the company says, “however within the next year we hope to be in a position to offer it up to the ICC and its member boards as a ball that could be tested and used at international level. It’s likely we will see it trialled in a major Twenty20 league within the year.”

The company presented to the MCC World Cricket Committee, which was held at Lord’s ahead of the second test of the 2019 Specsavers Ashes Series.
