The Labour party has introduced a proposal in its new manifesto to allow football fans the chance to buy a stake in their club.
Fans could have the chance to buy up to 25% of their club as the party remains concerned about the amount of debt and foreign ownership in football.
Government lawyers are working on how to make the proposals fit into the guidelines of the existing financial structure of the game.
The idea has been backed by UEFA president Michel Platini: ‘Personally, I think it is a great idea… that the supporters invest in a club because they at the end of the day (they can) defend the club’s identity.’
The Conservatives dismissed the proposals as a ‘gimmick’ ahead of the general election – expected to take place on 6th May.
‘After 13 years of inactivity by the government on this issue this has all the hallmarks of a pre-election gimmick,’ said shadow sports minister Hugh Robertson.
