The leaders of Philadelphia’s sports, politics and business communities gathered on Tuesday night for the Beyond Sport Mayor’s Reception, honouring the city’s outstanding community sports programmes through the Barclays Philadelphia Impact Award and naming eight young leaders from the city to Beyond Sport’s global Young Ambassadors Programme.
Mayor Michael A. Nutter hosted the gathering, at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, as part of the Beyond Sport Summit and Awards 2013, currently being staged in the city. He was joined by the likes of Eagles legend Brian Dawkins and Sixer, Lavoy Allen, as well as each of the Philadelphia sports teams – the Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers and Union – who collectively backed the event.
Alongside 800 attendees, they saw Students Run Philly Style, which offers intensive marathon training as part of a programme which helps youth succeed in life by connecting students with adult mentors, named as winner of the Barclays Philadelphia Impact Award from a shortlist of five outstanding Philadelphia programmes. Each of the shortlisted programmes will receive pro bono consultancy from EY, access to the Beyond Sport network and fundraising opportunities, with Students Run Philly Style also awarded funding.
Meanwhile, eight young leaders were named to Beyond Sport’s Young Ambassador’s Programme, joining youngsters from London and New York in the scheme. Philadelphia’s representatives in the global initiative will be Mallory Fredericks (Starfinder Foundation), Sallen Woewiyu (Starfinder Foundation), Michael Palamountain (Philadelphia City Rowing), Shareesa Bollers (Students Run Philly Style), Shanae Walters – SquashSmarts), Korinne Dennis (Eagles Youth Partnership), Jeff McDonald (Team PROLIMB), and Sakora Miller (SquashSmarts).
Nick Keller, the Founder of Beyond Sport, said: ‘These eight young leaders are living proof of the incredible role sports can play in social change and we are delighted to welcome them as Beyond Sport Young Ambassadors. They, like Students Run Philly Style and the other programs shortlisted for the Barclays Philadelphia Impact Award, are testament to the phenomenal sporting passion and community engagement in this great city.’
The Beyond Sport Mayor’s Reception was staged as part of the Beyond Sport Summit and Awards 2013, which concludes on Wednesday 11th September at the Loews Hotel.
