Leeds Utd Wins New Shirt Sponsor Deal

Troubled football club Leeds United has signed a one-year shirt sponsorship deal
with RedKite.

Debt-ridden Leeds were left without a principal sponsor after gaming firm
Bet24 decided not to renew its association which expired at the end of last
season.

The value of the RedKite deal is unknown but, with the club having been
relegated into League 1 – the third tier of English domestic football, it is
unlikely to have matched the revenue brought in from the previous sponsor.

Leeds was placed into administration last season and has since been declared
insolvent. Club chairman Ken Bates then acquired the club, but alleged
irregularities over the deal have led to a High Court challenge by HM Revenue
& Customs.

The off-pitch wrangling raised the prospect of Leeds being barred from
competing in the upcoming League 1 season. The Bates deal has averted this
prospect, although the club has been slapped with a 15-point penalty for going
into administration.
