Leicester Swerves EFL Point Deduction

The English Football League (EFL) has revealed Championship football club Leicester City will not face a points deduction this season.

Last month, Leicester took legal action against both the EFL and the Premier League, after the club was charged with breaches of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), and was subsequently placed under a transfer embargo by the EFL.

In an official statement, the EFL said, ‘Having taken legal advice, the EFL has confirmed to all parties that whilst it would want to respect any decision of a Premier League disciplinary commission (and vice versa) to deduct points in the EFL, it does not have the power under the regulations as currently drafted.’

Earlier this month, Leicester reported a pre-tax loss of £89.7m in its annual accounts for the 2022/23 season, taking the West Midlands club’s total losses to £215.3m between 2020 and 2023. The Premier League’s PSR prohibits clubs from making a cumulative losses of more than £105m over three years.

Leicester had argued that the EFL did not have the authority to impose sanctions on breaches relating to the Premier League, in which the club played in prior to relegation at the end of last season.

Responding to the EFL, Leicester said, ‘LCFC continues to try and co-operate constructively with both the Premier League and the EFL to reach a lawful resolution of any issues relating to PSR, in accordance with our consistent commitment that any charges against the club should be properly and proportionately determined, in accordance with the applicable rules, by the right bodies, and at the right time.’

At present, Leicester are second in the EFL Championship table on 88 points, and are on course for promotion back to the Premier League.
