Under Armour has expanded its UK roster with the addition of Toulon and Wales full-back, Leigh Halfpenny.
The rugby player had an outstanding 2013 season that saw him named Six Nations Player of the Tournament and British and Irish Lions’ Player of the Series as well as earning the runner-up spot on Sports Personality of the Year and a place on the 2013 IRB Player of the Year shortlist.
However, shoulder and groin injuries have delayed his 2014 season, finally making his long-awaited Toulon debut in the French Top 14 last weekend.
As part of the new deal, Leigh will wear the brand’s latest performance apparel and footwear in training and on match day for the Under Armour sponsored WRU.
For his club team he will compete in the brand’s UA ClutchFit Force boots.
Halfpenny said: ‘I’m proud to be part of the team at Under Armour. After several injury setbacks this year, I understand their passion in overcoming obstacles to succeed. I’m now looking forward to strengthening my game with one of the greatest brands in the world behind me, powering every step of my training.’
Chris Bate, Vice President/Managing Director of Under Armour Europe added: ‘Leigh personifies the Under Armour brand spirit. He’s performed for years in our technical performance apparel on the pitch with the Welsh Rugby Union, and now he’ll be able to experience our brand innovation from head to toe. We’re looking forward to working with an athlete we consider to be one of the best in the world.’
In addition to Welsh rugby teammates Roberts, Lydiate, and Faletau, Halfpenny joins a global athlete roster including USA football player Jermaine Jones, golfer Jordan Spieth, American football world-champion Tom Brady.
