Mass participation sports engagement agency, Limelight Sports, has unveiled a new event that will see amateurs offered the chance to enter a round the world cycling race for the first time.
‘Race the World’ is a four month global challenge that is – according to the agency – ‘driven and inspired by an observation of people’s desire to challenge themselves physically and mentally.’
Marketed as ‘A simple idea. A chance to make history.’ Race the World is the first fully supported round the world cycling race and, with a commitment to training, is achievable to anyone who is willing to take on a physical challenge.
Participants will be assigned to teams, led by professional, experienced team managers, with everyone on the team required to work towards the collective team goal. Teams will race against the clock and the team with the lowest accumulative time across all legs wins.
Craig Dews, CEO said of the launch: ‘It’s a very important moment in the history of Limelight Sports! Race the World has been a long time in the planning and a large amount of work has gone in to getting us to this stage. It is a huge undertaking and incredibly exciting.’
The race will start in London, UK, on 9th August 2015, and will finish in Miami, Florida, USA, on 14th November 2015 covering a total of 17,500km cycled. Each leg lasts two weeks and racers have the option to take on as many legs of the challenge as they choose.
The five Race the World legs can be embarked upon individually or collectively:
- Leg 1: London, UK to Istanbul, Turkey
- Leg 2: Tbilisi, Georgia to Almaty, Kazakhstan
- Leg 3: Mandalay, Myanmar to Singapore
- Leg 4: Perth, Western Australia to Melbourne, Victoria
- Leg 5: LA, California to Miami, Florida
